The Evolution of Event Photography

Photo booths have been a staple of event entertainment for decades, but the technology and experience have changed dramatically. The traditional enclosed booth with its curtain, single camera, and strip of printed photos has given way to an array of modern options that offer much more than a simple snapshot. Understanding the differences between a 360 booth and a traditional photo booth will help you choose the option that best fits your event.

What Is a Traditional Photo Booth?

The traditional photo booth is the format most people are familiar with. It typically features an enclosed or semi-enclosed structure where guests sit or stand in front of a single camera. After a countdown, the camera takes a series of photos, usually three or four, which are then printed as a strip or collage within seconds.

Traditional booths have an undeniable nostalgic charm. The experience of squeezing into a small space with friends, pulling silly faces, and waiting for the strip to emerge from the printer is a classic part of event culture. The physical prints are tangible mementos that guests can take home immediately.

Modern versions of the traditional booth have updated the technology while keeping the core experience intact. High-resolution cameras, touchscreen interfaces, digital filters, and instant social media sharing have all been added to enhance the classic format. Many traditional booths now also offer video messages and GIF creation alongside standard photos.

What Is a 360 Photo Booth?

A 360 photo booth represents a completely different approach to event photography. Instead of capturing a single static image, a camera rotates around the guests on a central platform, filming them from every angle. The result is a dynamic, slow-motion video that is then enhanced with music, effects, text overlays, and visual filters.

The experience itself is dramatically different from a traditional booth. Guests stand on an open platform, often in the middle of the venue, creating a much more social and visible experience. The spinning camera arm creates a sense of theatre and excitement, drawing attention and generating energy throughout the event.

The content produced by a 360 booth is inherently shareable. Short, visually striking videos perform exceptionally well on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. This makes 360 booths particularly popular with younger demographics and at events where social sharing is a priority.

Comparing the Guest Experience

The guest experience differs significantly between the two formats. A traditional booth offers an intimate, private experience. The enclosed space allows guests to be silly without feeling self-conscious, which can result in more natural, uninhibited photos. There is a sense of anticipation while waiting for the prints, and the physical strip becomes an instant keepsake.

A 360 booth offers a more performative, social experience. Standing on an open platform with a camera spinning around you feels exciting and glamorous. Guests tend to put more thought into their poses and outfits, knowing they are creating a piece of video content. The addition of effects like confetti, wind machines, or smoke adds to the spectacle.

Neither experience is objectively better; they simply cater to different preferences and event atmospheres. A sophisticated black-tie dinner might suit a traditional booth tucked into an elegant corner, while a lively birthday party or prom might be better served by a 360 booth positioned centre stage.

Content Output and Quality

The type of content each booth produces is perhaps the most significant difference. Traditional booths produce still images, either as individual photos or arranged in strips and collages. These are perfect for printing and creating physical memories. Many people stick their photo strips on fridges, pin them to notice boards, or store them in memory boxes for years.

360 booths produce video content. The slow-motion clips are typically between ten and twenty seconds long and are optimised for digital sharing. They look stunning on phone screens and social media feeds but do not translate to physical prints in the same way. However, many 360 booth providers also offer the option to extract still frames from the video if guests want a static image.

In terms of pure visual impact, 360 video content tends to generate more excitement and engagement on social media. The dynamic, cinematic quality of the footage stands out in feeds filled with static images. For events where social media exposure is a goal, this can be a significant advantage.

Space and Venue Considerations

Practical considerations around space and venue layout can influence your decision. Traditional booths are generally more compact, requiring a smaller footprint. They can be tucked into corners, corridors, or smaller function rooms without dominating the space. The enclosed design also means they work well in venues with varying lighting conditions, as the booth's internal lighting creates a controlled environment.

360 booths need more space. The platform and camera arm require a clear area, and you need additional space around the edges for the queue and the operator. They also work best in areas with decent ceiling height to accommodate the camera arm's full range of motion.

That said, the larger footprint of a 360 booth can be an advantage. It becomes a natural focal point and entertainment hub, drawing guests in and creating a buzz that radiates through the event. If you have the space, the presence of a 360 booth can elevate the entire atmosphere of your venue.

Which Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your event type, your guests, your venue, and your personal preferences. If you value nostalgic charm, physical prints, and an intimate experience, a traditional photo booth or a modern selfie booth could be the perfect fit. If you want maximum visual impact, social media-friendly content, and a high-energy entertainment centrepiece, a 360 booth is hard to beat.

Of course, you do not have to choose just one. For larger events, combining both formats can offer the best of both worlds, giving guests variety and ensuring there is something for everyone regardless of their preferences.
